"...Escríbeme, si quieres, de una manera mas detallada acerca de la exposición de Manet, dime los cuadros que hay. Yo siempre he encontrado a Manet muy original....Lamento no haber visto sino muy pocas de sus pinturas. Quisiera, sobre todo, ver sus desnudos.
No encuentro exagerado que algunos - Zola, por ejemplo - estén entusiasmados, aunque por mi parte tampoco creo, de ningún modo, que pueda ser colocado entre los primeros de este siglo. Pero es un talento que tiene muy ciertamente su "razón de ser", y esto ya es mucho. En cuanto a mí, no puedo estar de acuerdo con Zola cuando concluye como si Manet fuera un hombre que abre, en suma, un nuevo porvenir a las concepciones modernas en el arte. Para mí no es Manet, es Millet el pintor esencialmente moderno, gracias a quien el horizonte se ha abierto para muchos..."

"...Please write me some more details about the Manet exhibition; tell me which of his pictures are there. I have always found Manet's work very origional... I am sorry to have seen so very few of his pictures. I should especially like to see his figures of nude women. I do not think it exaggerated that some people, for instance Zola, rave about him, though I, for my part, do not think he can be reckoned among the very first of this century. But his is a talent which certainly has its raison d'être, and that is a great thing in itself.
For my part, I cannot agree with Zola's conclusions, as if Manet were a man who opens a new future to modern ideas of art; I consider Millet, not Manet, to be that essentially modern painter who opened a new horizon to many..."

...me causa un enorme placer eso que dices de que el retrato de la arlesiana, hecho rigurosamente sobre tu dibujo, te ha gustado.

He tratado de seguir con fidelidad respetuosa tu dibujo, y sin embargo, tomando la libertad de interpretar por medio de un color el carácter sobrio y el estilo del dibujo en cuestión. Es una síntesis de arlesiana, si quieres; como las síntesis de arlesianas son raras, toma ésta como obra tuya y mía; como resumen de nuestros meses de trabajo juntos. Para hacerlo, yo he pagado por mi parte,más de un mes de enfermedad, pero también yo sé que es una tela que tú, yo, y otros pocos comprenderemos, como nosotros querríamos que se comprenda...".

Thank you for having written to me again, old fellow...

...and it gives me enormous pleasure when you say the Arlésienne´s portrait, which was based strictly on your drawing, is to your liking. I tried to be religiously faithful to your drawing, while nevertheless taking the liberty of interpreting through the medium of colour the sober character and the style of the drawing in question. It is a synthesis of the Arlésiennes, if you like: as a syntheses of the Arlésiennes are rare, take this as a work belonging to you a me as a summary of our months of work togheter. For my part I paid for doing it whith another month of illness. But I also know that is a canvas which will be understood by you and by very few others, as we would wish it to be understood..."
