“…He leído hace algún tiempo un artículo sobre el Dante, Petrarca, Boccaccio, Giotto, Botticelli, dios mío!...que impresión me ha hecho el leer las cartas de esa gente.
Según eso, Petrarca estaba aquí muy cerca de Avignon, y yo veo los mismos cipreses y laureles rosas. He tratado de poner algo de esto en uno de los jardines pintados a plena pasta, amarillo limón y verde lión. Giotto es el que mas me ha emocionado, siempre sufriendo y siempre lleno de bondad y ardor, como si viviera ya en otro mundo distinto. Giotto es además extraordinario y lo percibo mejor que a los poetas: el Dante, Petrarca y Boccaccio…”

"...Some time ago I read an article on Dante, Petrarch, Boccaccio, Giotto and Botticelli. Good Lord! it did make an impression on me reading the letters of those men. And Petrarch lived quite near here in Avignon, and I am seeing the same cypresses and oleanders. I have tried to put something of that into one of the pictures painted in a very thick impasto, citron yellow and lime green. Giotto moved me most – always in pain, and always full of kindness and enthusiasm, as though he were already living in a different world from ours. And besides, Giotto is extraordinary. I understand him better than the poets Dante, Petrarch and Boccaccio..."
